Religious Education
Vision of Intent for RE
At Thornhill Lees I & N School, the aim of Religious Education is to help children to acquire and develop knowledge and understanding of Christianity, Islam and aspects of other principal religions represented in Great Britain. The teaching of R.E. is vital for children to understand others beliefs and make connections between their own values. We ensure pupils are being inquisitive by asking questions about the world around them by allowing pupils to gain high quality experiences.
Religious Education is taught throughout the school in such a way as to reflect the overall aims, values, and philosophy of the school. As a Church of England school, Religious Education plays an important role, along with all other curriculum areas, particularly PSHE and the teaching of British Values and in promoting the spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development of our children. In RE children learn to articulate clearly and coherently their personal beliefs, ideas, values and experiences while respecting the right of others to differ.
At Thornhill Lees we follow The Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education in Kirklees, Calderdale and Leeds 2019-2024 (Believing and Belonging in West Yorkshire). RE is approached through stories, cross curricular themes, RE topics, festivals, RE WOW days, and whole school topics, discussion on specific ideas and spontaneous enquiries.
The curriculum is designed around the three aims of the syllabus:
- To investigate the beliefs and practices of religions and other world views
- To investigate how religions and other world views address questions of meaning, purpose and value.
- To investigate how religions and other world views influence morality, identity and diversity
Religious Education at Thornhill Less is a window to the world for the children to open and gain knowledge and insights into the diverse world we live in today. It helps with children’s own personal development and supports an understanding of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural questions that they will be inquisitive about in their lives.
